RH134 Ch 8: Targets, GRUB and a Lost Root Password

servera came back from the data centre in a bad way: nobody knows the root password, it boots to the graphical target although it is a server, and someone left a stale entry in `/etc/fstab`. Fix the boot configuration, reset root's password at the console, and prove the machine reboots cleanly.

Tasks

  1. Make multi-user.target the default boot target.
  2. Add the kernel argument auditbackloglimit=8192 persistently to every installed kernel.
  3. Set the GRUB menu timeout to 10 seconds and regenerate the GRUB configuration.
  4. Reset the root password to Rhcsa@2026 by interrupting the boot (rd.break). Make sure SELinux labels are fixed so root can log in afterwards.
  5. Remove the stale /olddata entry from /etc/fstab, then reboot. servera must come up in multi-user.target without dropping into emergency mode, running with your new kernel argument.
