RH134 Ch 6: Grow, Add and Remove Logical Volumes

The application log volume on servera is full and an old volume is no longer needed. Add a disk to the volume group, grow the logs online, add swap on LVM, retire the old volume, and build a new volume group to the developers' extent-size spec.

Tasks

  1. Add /dev/vdc to the existing volume group vgapp.
  2. Grow lvlogs (mounted on /applogs) and its XFS file system to 3 GiB while it stays mounted.
  3. Create a 512 MiB logical volume lvswap in vgapp, set it up as swap and activate it now and at boot.
  4. Remove the obsolete logical volume lvold (mounted on /old) cleanly: unmount it, delete its /etc/fstab line and remove the LV.
  5. Create the volume group vgdev on /dev/vdb with a physical extent size of 8 MiB. In it create lvbuild with exactly 50 extents, format it with ext4 and mount it on /build at boot by UUID.
